College Football Betting: Auburn at Arkansas

The University of Arkansas hasn’t had an easy time of things over the past few years. Things were going reasonably well with Bobby Petrino at the helm but that was before he was embroiled in a messy affair with a younger woman who happened to work for the University. He was sent packing and John L. Smith brought in to clean up the mess. Smith’s ethics weren’t an issue but his coaching performance quickly became one. He was also kicked to the curb and Wisconsin coach Bret Bielema hired. The hope was that the problem with the Razorbacks would be quickly fixed with the coaching upgrade and the year began with some promise. Arkansas won their first two games against weak opposition and hasn’t won since. The team has not only lost but they’ve done so in spectacularly non competitive fashion.

Arkansas’ two wins this season are almost meaningless. They beat FCS opponent Samford and followed that up with a win over Southern Mississippi. Southern Miss has now lost 19 straight games after an 0-12 season last year and an 0-7 start to the season this year. The Razorbacks’ performance in the subsequent losses are more telling–since beating hapless Southern Miss they’re 0-5 SU/1-4 ATS with the only cover a ‘backdoor’ job against Texas A&M. Dating back to the last year of the Petrino era Arkansas is 2-12 SU/4-10 ATS as an underdog which suggests that they roll over when stepping up in class.

Things are much better at Auburn where the Tigers are 7-1 SU/6-2 ATS with the only SU loss against LSU. New head coach Gus Malzahn took over with a lot of talent on hand and his team is currently ranked #11 in the country. They could put a few more wins in the ledger before the season ends. The 11/30 game against Alabama is a tough test but games at Tennessee and home against Georgia are definitely ‘winnable’. In Auburn’s last home game they were destroyed 52-7 by South Carolina and put up no effort at Alabama on 10/19. The fact they’re coming off a bye won’t help things. We get the feeling that this team is ‘playing out the string’ and we’ll gladly go against them here.
