College Football Betting: Boise State at Utah State

Important Mountain West Conference matchup on Saturday as the Boise State Broncos make the trip to Logan, Utah to take on the Utah State Aggies. Utah State currently leads the MWC Mountain Division with a 2-0 conference record but Boise State could get right back in the mix with a victory here. Boise actually has a better overall record at 3-2 than the 3-3 Aggies though all three of Utah State’s losses have come to top of the food chain level opposition (Utah, BYU, USC).
Many armchair handicappers will pass up Utah State this weekend due to the season ending injury to starting quarterback Chuckie Keeton. Keeton is a talented QB to be sure but we’re not ready to write off the Aggies for that reason alone. Gary Andersen left this program in great shape for new head coach Matt Wells. In fact, we’re of the opinion that no one outside of the Beehive State realizes just how much the entire Aggie football program has improved in the past few seasons. One thing that is evident is that this is a down year for Boise State—not surprising given their recent run of success and the talent they lost to the NFL after last season. The Broncos have been a horrible investment against conference opponents in recent years going 5-12 ATS since 2011. They’re also 12-16 ATS as a favorite in that time frame.
With or without Keeton this is a huge game for Utah State. Wells won’t name a replacement until gametime (it’ll be either Craig Harrison or Darrell Garretson) but lost in the hubbub over the Aggies’ quarterback is the fact that this team has a solid defense and is very tough ‘in the trenches’ on both sides of the ball. Utah State is likely the more physical team and Romney Stadium in Logan, Utah is a very tough venue for opposing teams. Since 2011 Utah State is 21-9 ATS overall and 9-2 ATS as an underdog. The Broncos have historically beat up on the Aggies but they haven’t played since 2010. Utah State has improved dramatically since then. This game means a lot more to Utah State than it does to Boise and even without Keeton in the lineup the Aggies will get the victory.
