MLB Baseball Betting: Atlanta Braves at New York Mets

Despite the fact that the Atlanta Braves are going nowhere with one of the worst records in baseball this series with the New York Mets is very important. The Mets are likely not going to run down the NL East leading Washington Nationals whom they trail by 8.5 games. Instead they must make the playoffs via the wild card and that’s a dicey proposition. Currently the Mets are tied with the San Francisco Giants for the top wild card spot with a 1 game lead over the St. Louis Cardinals. That is pending the outcome of the Cards’ game with the Colorado Rockies on Monday night. At any rate, there are three teams separated by a single game playing for two spots. The wild card table could get even more competitive with the Miami Marlins just 4.5 games back, the Pittsburgh Pirates 5 games back and the Colorado Rockies 7 games back.

New York has been in decent form winning 8 of their last 12 though they lost the series opener to the Braves on Monday night. That was Atlanta’s third straight win though their form hasn’t been very good of late–prior to their recent 3 game winning streak they’d lost 7 of their last 9 games. They’ll start right hander Julio Teheran here–he deserves some sort of medal for pitching very well through a disastrous season. As if the Braves miserable last place performance wasn’t enough they’ve hung Teheran out to dry more often than a basket of laundry. For the year, Teheran has a 3.18 ERA with a 1.035 WHIP and a road ERA of 2.82 with a 0.914 WHIP. The Braves haven’t done their part, losing 20 of their 27 starts including 5 of 11 on the road.

Robert Gsellman gets the start for the Mets–the right hander has put up capable performances in his four starts with a 3.57 ERA and a 1.412 WHIP with a 3.75 ERA and a 1.417 WHIP at home. He’s put up a 2.70 ERA and a 1.440 WHIP in his last three games. The Mets have split his four starts but have won 2 of his last 3. The Braves have put up a decent effort in the second half and have made a nice chunk of change on the road (+12.7 units).
