MLB Baseball Betting: Chicago Cubs at New York Mets

Rare spot where the Chicago Cubs are installed as an underdog on Friday night as they’ll play the second game of their four game weekend series against the New York Mets at CitiField. The Mets got the first game in the books on Thursday as they scored 3 runs in the bottom of the seventh to erase a 3-1 deficit and held on to win 4-3. The Cubs have now lost 6 of 10 while the Mets have split their last 10 games. New York is 6 games back of the Washington Nationals for the NL East lead while the Cubs have managed to build on their advantage in the NL Central despite not playing particularly well. Chicago now leads St. Louis by 11 games and with every team in the division playing .500 ball or worse in the near term there’s no reason to think they’ll be challenged any time soon.
The Mets will start Jacob Degrom who has put up decent numbers this year but has been a victim of his team’s sputtering offense. Overall, DeGrom has a 2.67 ERA and a 1.123 WHIP but the Mets are just 6-7 when he starts. At home they’ve won 4 of 7 with DeGrom posting a 2.51 ERA. In his last three starts he’s been exceptional with a 2.25 ERA and a 1.050 WHIP. Somehow the Mets managed to lose two of those three games and DeGrom got a ‘no decision’ in the game they won. It’s not supposed to work like that. During that stretch DeGrom pitched 20 innings allowing 5 earned runs and striking out 21. Unfortunately, the Mets scored just 1 run in support of DeGrom.
Chicago will start Jason Hammel. They’ve lost his last three starts though he hasn’t pitched badly. He’s got a 3.37 ERA in his last three games though that’s almost entirely based on a 4 ER performance against St. Louis on June 21. He allowed a total of 3 earned runs in the other two starts. For the year, he’s got a 2.58 ERA overall and the Cubs have won 9 of his 15 starts including 4 of 9 on the road.
Just can’t trust the Mets’ offense with their recent play. We’ll take the Cubs at a very reasonable price and look for them to get back on the winning track here.
