MLB Baseball Betting: Colorado Rockies at Washington Nationals

The Colorado Rockies had been playing well up until a few weeks ago but they’ve slumped badly in the month of August with a record of 8-14. They’ll try to get things back on the winning track starting on Friday when they head to Washington, DC to take on the Nationals. Colorado had been looking like contenders in the NL West until recently but now they’re 11.5 games off the lead and have lost three straight and 6 of 10. The Nationals have their own issues–they’ve lost 6 of 10 and had lost six of ten until they pulled off a victory in the final game of a four game set against the Baltimore Orioles. The good news is that no one else in the NL East is showing much urgency to challenge the Nationals who remain 8 games up on the Miami Marlins and 10 up on the New York Mets.

Jeff Hoffman will get his second career start in this game and it’ll have to go better than his debut. That’s not just ‘wishful thinking’ its because his debut couldn’t have gone much worse. Hoffman went 4 innings allowing 6 earned runs, 7 hits and 1 home run walking one and striking out two. That means he’s got a 13.50 ERA and 2.000 WHIP. He’s a highly valued prospect and was the key component of the Troy Tulowitzki trade. Great things are expected of him but as of yet he’s 0-1 for his career. In all fairness, there aren’t many worse situations for a career debut than at Coors Field against the 2016 Chicago Cubs.

He’ll be opposed by lefthander Gio Gonzalez who is having a substandard year though he has been in better form since the All Star Break. Overall, Gonzalez has a 4.30 ERA with a 1.328 WHIP, a 4.15 ERA with a 1.327 WHIP and a L3 ERA of 5.93 with a 1.536 WHIP. The Nationals have lost 15 of his 25 starts overall including 7 of 12 at home and 1 of his last 3. Colorado hits left handed pitching well–in 36 games against southpaw starters they’ve put up a 5.1 run per game average hitting .260.

We’ve not been impressed with Gonzalez this year and have no problem going against him in this situation, especially at this price.
