MLB Baseball Betting: Miami Marlins at Pittsburgh Pirates

The Miami Marlins need to get back on the winning track if they’re going to challenge the Washington Nationals for first place in the NL East. The Marlins have slumped in the month of August going 5-10 -5.9 (pending the outcome of Thursday’s game). They have caught a break in that the Nationals have lost two straight and are only 5-5 in their last ten games. That leaves the Marlins 8.5 games back of Washington and 2 games ahead of the third place New York Mets. The Pirates have been heading in the other direction and have been playing well of late. They’ve won 4 straight and 7 of 10 and are just one game behind the second place St. Louis Cardinals in the NL Central. They can forget about catching the Chicago Cubs but the Cards also hold down the final NL wild card spot. So the Bucs are 1 game out of the second wild card spot and 3 games behind the San Francisco Giants for the top wild card spot in the National League. The Marlins, incidentally, are just 1 game behind the Pirates in the wild card standings.

Pittsburgh will start right hander Gerrit cole who has been erratic this year. To be fair, he hasn’t always received much help from his teammates. The Pirates have won 8 of his 18 starts this season including 3 of 9 at home. He’s got a 3.25 ERA overall with a 1.329 WHIP, a 2.94 ERA at home with a 1.192 WHIP and a L3 ERA of 6.00 with a 1.800 WHIP. He’s not looked sharp in his last two starts but he catches a break here–the Marlins have lost a ton of money against right handed pitching going 41-50 -17.2 units.

He’ll be opposed by righty Tom Koehler who has been mediocre on the season but has looked good in his most recent starts. For the year, the Bucs have lost 13 of his 24 starts including 8 of 13 at home. Koehler has put up a 3.86 ERA with a 1.391 WHIP overall, a 4.29 ERA with a 1.514 WHIP on the road and a very impressive last three ERA of 1.89 with a 0.947 WHIP.

Pirates have dominated in head to head play and worth noting that Koheler is winless for his career against Pittsburgh.
