MLB Baseball Betting: New York Yankees at New York Mets

The New York Mets have never played the New York Yankees in the month of September. Until now. Not only is this a historically significant series it means a lot to both teams in terms of their postseason aspirations. The Mets are trying to clinch the NL East–they lead the Washington Nationals by 6.5 games which leaves their ‘magic number’ at 8. Any combination of Mets’ victories or Nationals’ losses will give them the divisional title. The Yankees, meanwhile, are trying to hold on to a wildcard spot (they lead the first non-qualifier by six games and Houston–holder of the second wild card spot by 3.5 games) while they try to run down the Toronto Blue Jays who currently hold a three game advantage atop the AL East. The Mets won the first game of the series on Friday night, the Yankees won game two last night. The Mets have a three game series with lowly Atlanta on deck while the Yankees have a *huge* series against the aforementioned Toronto Blue Jays.

Good pitching matchup between Matt Harvey and C.C. Sabathia. Sabathia’s YTD numbers aren’t especially impressive–4.93 overall ERA and the Yankees have won 12 of his 26 starts this season. He’s looked very good in his most recent outings, however, with a 1.93 ERA in his last three assignments. The bad news–the Yankees managed to lose two of these games. The Mets will counter with Matt Harvey. Harvey has been excellent this season and particularly at home where he’s got a 2.56 ERA and the Mets have won 11 of his 15 assignments. He’s not been in exceptional form lately with a 5.61 ERA in his last three games–though the Mets managed to win two of them.

With the huge series against Toronto on deck for the Yankees we think the Mets will be the more focused team. A win over their crosstown rivals is nice, but a divisional title is nicer and with Atlanta on deck the Mets have their full focus here. Harvey dominated the Yankees when he faced them earlier this season while the Mets didn’t have much trouble with Sabathia in the same game. Tough to lay this price against a good Yankees team but that looks like the way to play it.
