MLB Baseball Betting: Philadelphia Phillies at Arizona Diamondbacks

National League action in the desert for Wednesday as the Philadelphia Phillies and Arizona Diamondbacks play the final game of an early week series. The Phillies won the first game 8-0 and the Diamondbacks really need to get things turned around. They had played well winning 7 of 8 but have lost three straight pending the outcome of Tuesday’s matchup. The Phillies had been the worst team in baseball over the past month but have won 3 of 5 pending Tuesday’s game. The Phillies are going nowhere. They’re in fourth place in the National League East 8.5 games back of the Miami Marlins and New York Mets (tied for second) and 6.5 game up on the Atlanta Braves. The Diamondbacks have won 6 of 10 despite their recent downturn and are 13.5 games behind the first place San Francisco Giants and 2.5 games back of the Colorado Rockies in third place. They’re also trying to stay ahead of the San Diego Padres just 2 games back.

Philadelphia will start Zach Eflin who has struggled in his three assignments this year. The Phillies have lost all of Eflin’s starts and he’s put up a 6.28 ERA and a 8.30 ERA in his two road starts. He’ll be opposed by righthander Archie Bradley and Arizona has won 5 of his 8 starts this season though just one of three at home. Given the Diamondbacks’ home problems this season that’s not surprising. He’s got a 4.50 ERA overall and a 5.78 ERA video in his home starts. The Diamondbacks have won 4 of 5 meetings in head to head play though they’re 0-1 at home pending the outcome of Tuesday’s game.

Philadelphia has turned a small profit on the road (+1.5 units) while the Diamondbacks have been burning money at home. Arizona is 13-26 at home for a whopping -17.3 units loss. They’ve been a good investment on the road (+12 units) but for whatever reason can’t get the job done at home. That brings us back to the pricing on this game which is downright inexplicable. The Diamondbacks are a -150 favorite and there’s no apparent reason why. The pitching matchup looks like a toss up and given the Diamondbacks’ home struggle there’s just no way to view this matchup as anything less than a ‘tossup’. We’ll back the Phillies.
