MLB Baseball Betting: Philadelphia Phillies at Los Angeles Dodgers

The Philadelphia Phillies will try to salvage a win in their three game series with the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday after dropping the first two. Los Angeles has won four straight and 7 of 10 and has moved into a tie with the San Francisco Giants for first place in the NL West. They’ll host another struggling opponent this weekend as they welcome the Pittsburgh Pirates to Chavez Ravine. Th Phillies have lost two straight and are going nowhere. They’re now 15.5 games out of first place in the NL East but their more immediate concern is keeping the all of a sudden red hot Atlanta Braves in their rear view mirror. The Braves still have the worst record in baseball but have now won 4 straight and 7 of 10. They’ve cut their deficit behind the fourth place Phillies to 8 games.

Philadelphia will start right hander Jeremy Hellickson who many expected to be traded at the deadline. The Phillies made the effort to send the veteran right hander to a contender but didn’t find a deal to their liking. Philadelphia is 13-10 in Hellickson’s starts including 7-4 on the road. They’ve won his last three assignments. Hellickson has been solid all season–he’s got a 3.72 ERA overall with a 1.152 WHIP, a 3.78 ERA on the road with a 1.170 WHIP and a L3 ERA of 2.94 with a 1.091 WHIP. He’s facing a Dodgers team that hits right handed starters well–L.A. is 50-35 +4.5 units against right handers this season.

Los Angeles will send struggling lefthander Scott Kazmir to the mound. Kazmir has been mediocre at best this season–the Dodgers have gone 12-10 in his 22 games including 6-6 at home. They’ve lost two of his last three starts as well. Overall, Kazmir has a 4.51 ERA for the season with a 1.282 WHIP, a 4.21 home ERA with a 1.417 WHIP and a 5.82 L3 ERA with a 1.353 WHIP. He catches a break as the Phillies haven’t hit left handers well this year averaging just 3.5 runs per game. The have made money against southpaws with their 12-13 record translating to 4.4 units of profit.

This looks like a situation where the old ‘avoiding the sweep’ concept will be viable as the Phillies have the starting pitching edge and are getting a huge underdog price.
