MLB Baseball Betting: Pittsburgh Pirates at St. Louis Cardinals

It wasn’t that long ago that the Pittsburgh Pirates were left for dead in the dregs of the NL Central. They were plummeting down the standings and the expectation was that they’d soon be battling with the Cincinnati Reds for last place. Now, not so much. The Pirates are all of a sudden playing great baseball and will try to complete a four game sweep of the St. Louis Cardinals on Thursday afternoon. Pittsburgh has done most of this damage on the road–they’ve won 9 of their last 12 games, eight of which were in enemy ballparks. They’ve also won 7 straight and are the last thing that the St. Louis Cardinals wanted to see with the Chicago Cubs all of a suddenly vulnerable.

St. Louis has been stalking the Cubs for most of the season but now the red hot Pirates have dropped them into third place. St. Louis is still 9 games back of sputtering Chicago but now Pittsburgh is in second place 8.5 games back. Things could get even more interesting as Major League baseball heads into the All Star Break as the Pirates will conclude their first half schedule against–the Chicago Cubs. Pittsburgh will play a three game weekend series at home against the Cubs while St. Louis will head up to Milwaukee to try and get their mojo back against the struggling Brewers who have lost 7 of their last 10.

Pittsburgh will start a highly touted prospect on Thursday as 22 year old Tyler Glasnow makes his major league debut. The right hander will be opposed by Adam Wainwright who has been solid if not spectacular–and at the very least consistent–for most of the season. St. Louis has won 11 of 17 Wainwright starts this season with the veteran righy putting up a 4.70 ERA and a 1.355 WHIP. They’ve won 5 of 8 at home with Wainwright posting a 3.16 ERA and a 1.227 WHIP.

There’s always those baseball handicappers that love ‘betting against the sweep’ at any opportunity but with the All Star Break on deck we don’t see that dynamic at work here. Given the recent form of the road team we’ll back the Bucs who have won 8 of 12 against St. Louis this year including 5 of 6 on the road.
