MLB Baseball Betting: San Francisco Giants at Colorado Rockies

The San Francisco Giants take a trip to the Rocky Mountains to take on the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field. The Giants are off to a nice start to the season winning 5 of their first 7 games. Colorado is 3-3 on the season. San Francisco took three of four from the Dodgers in their previous series while the Rockies were savaged by the San Diego Padres. San Diego won the first two games of the three game set by a combined margin of 29-9 before the Rockies salvaged a win in the getaway game.
Jeff Samardzija gets the call for the Giants and he didn’t look especially good in his first start of the season. He escaped with a ‘no decision’ in the Giants 4-3 loss to Milwaukee but his line wasn’t at all impressive: 5 1/3 innings 3 ER 8 hits and 3 BB mitigated by 6 strikeouts. Samardzija has never been a good early season pitcher–his record over the past three seasons in the month of April is 5-11 including a 2-7 record away from home. He is undefeated against Colorado throughout his career but worth noting that his starts came in Mid-May, late July and late August. That’s when we start taking a look at Samardzija.
He’ll be opposed by Tyler Chatwood–a pitcher we’ve always liked to bet on. Just a solid, underrated right hander who got a win in his first start of the year at Arizona allowing just 1 earned run on 7 hits in 6 1/3 innings of work. Chatwood’s numbers against San Francisco aren’t anything special but he hasn’t faced them since April of 2014 so not really much in the way of comparison.
Colorado has shown a tendency of starting the season playing competitive baseball. They’re 30-25 +5.8 units during April over the last three seasons and they made money against San Francisco last season (11-8 +400). The Rockies turned a profit against right handed pitchers here at Coors last year and they’ve got a vulnerable one on the hill today. San Francisco plays the Dodgers against at Los Angeles this weekend so this series could be an afterthought. Good matchup for the home team and they’ve definitely got the bats to put the hurt on Samardzija should he struggle.
