MLB Baseball Betting: San Francisco Giants at Washington Nationals

The San Francisco Giants have had a tough time of it lately. Even though they’re still in first place atop the NL West they’ve seen their advantage over the second place Los Angeles Dodgers drop to 2 games. Nothing really seems to be going right for the Giants and tonight they’re in just about the worst possible place for a struggling team to be–on the wrong end of a game against the Washington Nationals with Stephen Strasburg on the mound.

The Nationals are in good form at the moment having won 7 of 10 and 4 straight and opening up a 7 game lead over the second place Miami Marlins and a 9 game lead over the third place New York Mets. They’re 32-20 at home this year (though they’re somewhat overvalued here which is why that translates into a loss of -0.7 units. They’re 51-33 against right handers this year (ditto–which is why 18 games over .500 in the situation is good for only +2.9 units of profit). They’ll face struggling Matt Cain–the Giants have lost 4 of his 5 starts on the road this season and by any metric Cain is in poor form. He’s got a 5.53 ERA and 1.500 WHIP overall with a 7.48 ERA and 1.477 WHIP on the road and a 6.40 ERA and 1.422 WHIP in his last three games. There is something of a subtext to this story–he faced the Nationals in his last start and turned in a nice performance going 5 innings allowing 0 hits, 0 earned runs striking out 5 and walking 4 in a 3-1 Giants win.

And in the Nationals’ corner is Stephen Strasburg and unless you’ve been living under a rock you’re aware he’s having a monster season. His ERA isn’t overwhelming–2.63 ERA 0.980 WHIP, 3.34 ERA at home with a 0.982 WHIP and a L3 ERA of 3.32 with a 0.947 WHIP. The impressive part–Washington has won 18 of his 20 starts this year including 10 of 11 at home and 2 of 3. His last 3 ERA is a bit misleading–he pitched his worst game of the year on 7/21 allowing 6 ER in a 6-3 loss to the Dodgers. That was his first decision loss of the year and all he’s gone since is pitch 13 innings allowing a total of 6 hits and 1 earned run.
