MLB Baseball Betting: Washington Nationals at Arizona Diamondbacks

Short card for Monday which is also the MLB Trade Deadline. Only eight games on the board and in this preview we’ll look at a National League matchup between the Washington Nationals and the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Diamondbacks will be glad to see July come to an end–they went 7-17 -9.2 units during the month. They lost nine of their last twelve games and are 2.5 games back of the fourth place team in the NL West, the San Diego Padres. They’re 18 games back of the division leading San Francisco Giants and their biggest issue all season has been their horrible play at home. Arizona is 17-35 -24.2 units on their home field and a pitiful 29-47 -16.2 units against right handed pitching.

That’s bad news for several reasons. The Nationals are in a foul mood having lost 6 of 10 and two straight. They still have a 4 game lead over the Miami Marlins and a 6.5 lead over the New York Mets in the NL East divisional race. They’ve been treading water on the road in terms of ‘profit and loss’ but are well above .500 at 30-24 +0.8 units. The more significant bad news for a team hat has lost so much money against right handed pitching is that they’ve got to play one of the best in the business. Stephen Strasburg gets the start for the Nationals here. How did Strasburg react after taking his first ‘L’ of the year and giving up 6 earned runs to the LA Dodgers on 7/21? How do you *think* he reacted? At Cleveland on 7/27 he went 7 innings allowing just 3 hits and no earned runs with 7 K’s and two walks.

Archie Bradley gets the start for Arizona and he hasn’t pitched badly of late. The Diamondbacks have won two of his last three and he’s coming off a start almost as nice as Strasburg’s last start against the Milwaukee brewers on 7/27 (7 IP, 1 ER, 4 H, 6 K’s, 3 BB). For the year, however, he’s got a 5.15 ERA at home and the Diamondbacks have lost 4 of his 6 starts. For whatever reason the Diamondbacks just can’t get it done at home and Washington has dominated them in recent years (10-4 +4.9 units L3 years).
