NBA Basketball: San Antonio Spurs at Memphis Grizzlies

The Memphis Grizzlies put up a fierce effort in Game 2 of the Western Conference Finals but ultimately fell short putting them into a 2-0 hole heading back home. The Grizzlies did manage to get the money in Game 2 losing by 4 as +5 underdogs. Now the scene shifts to their tough home court at the FedEx Forum for Games 3 and 4 and the Grizz are in a veritable ‘must win’ situation. As everyone knows no NBA team has ever come back from a 3-0 series deficit and only eight teams in league history have ever come back from a 3-1 deficit to win a series (202-8). That makes tonight’s Game 3 crucial to the Grizzlies’ hope to advance to the NBA Finals.

Despite the Game 2 loss the Grizzlies have remained one of the hottest pointspread propositions in the NBA during the playoffs. Since the start of the postseason the Grizzlies are a torrid 11-2 against the spread. Dating back to the regular season Memphis has covered 13 of their last 15 games. In actuality, Memphis has been a pointspread killer all season long–overall the team is 58-34 against the spread and they’ve been especially good in this pointspread range. As a home favorite of -3.5 to -6 the Grizzlies have been especially strong going 11-2 against the spread.

As a pointspread play this season the Spurs have been decidedly mediocre. They’re right around breakeven in most every pointspread category though they have covered 8 of their 12 playoff games. They’ve not done particularly well in head to head play at Memphis–the Grizzlies have won 7 of their last 9 games at home with Memphis covering 6 of those games. Given the highly competitive nature of this series it’s tough to *not* take the points when they’re presented but we’ll go against the obvious and play the Grizzlies. This game will make or break their entire season while the Spurs have the comfort of some ‘breathing room’ with a 2-0 lead. Memphis will be on their tough home court and should come out focused and intense. Much like the Spurs ran the Grizz out of their building in the first game of the series we expect to see Memphis dominate in this matchup.
