NBA Betting Picks: Charlotte Bobcats at Memphis Grizzlies

More Tuesday night NBA action as the Memphis Grizzlies host the lowly Charlotte Bobcats at the FedEx Forum. Everyone knows that Charlotte is a bad team–they currently have the worst record in the NBA though the Orlando Magic is just 1/2 game ahead and could finish the season claiming this dubious distinction. That notwithstanding, the Bobcats *have* been a good pointspread investment of late. Charlotte has covered 5 of their last 7 and 7 of their last 11 games. That has more to do with the fact that no one takes them seriously and they get a ton of points every time they take the court than any significant uptick in the quality of their play but the bottom line is that they’re cashing bets.

That’s not necessarily an endorsement for the Bobcats in this game, however, and they’ve been at their worst when playing teams from the Western Conference. Against Western Conference foes they’re 3-26 SU/5-23-1 ATS. There’s any number of explanations for this–you can make a good case that top to bottom the West is a better conference than the ‘top heavy’ East or it could have more to do with scheduling. Eastern Conference teams see Charlotte more often and are more likely to be ‘caught napping’. Western Conference teams view losing to the woeful Bobcats as a more shameful mark. Compounding matters is the fact that Memphis has made money against Eastern Conference opponents going 21-8 SU/19-10 ATS and are a very tough home team in all situations. The Grizz are 30-8 SU/21-15-2 ATS at the FedEx Forum.

The Bobcats don’t get any breaks from the scheduling situation either–this is the only home game in a five game sequence for Memphis and they have three days off before they play again at Houston. Memphis has been in decent form of late, having won five of their last six games SU. It’s not really clear what Charlotte has left to play for–they may consider it a moral victory to not finish with the worst record in the league but that’ll likely happen regardless of what they do down the stretch due to the Orlando Magic’s downward spiral. Instead this looks like an easy home court win for the far more talented Grizzlies.
