NBA Betting Picks: Memphis Grizzlies at San Antonio Spurs

The Memphis Grizzlies have advanced to the NBA Finals for the first time in franchise history and will start their series on Sunday in San Antonio against the Spurs. The Grizzlies dispatched a gutsy but undermanned Oklahoma City team in six games to reach this point while the Spurs held off a determined effort from the upstart Golden State Warriors. The winner will earn a trip to the NBA Finals where they’ll meet the winner of the Indiana Pacers/Miami Heat series.

San Antonio is definitely the more experienced team but there are serious concerns that they might be *too* experienced–meaning that the age of their key players may have finally caught up with them. It sure looked that way at points during the Golden State series and truth be told San Antonio’s victory over the Warriors may have had more to do with Stephen Curry’s ailing ankles than anything else. They’ve definitely got the coaching required of a championship team with Greg Popovich at the helm. The question now is whether or not they can fight off ‘father time’ and a tenacious Grizzlies defense and have enough left to give the Eastern Conference winner a fight in the finals.

Memphis has made ‘winning ugly’ into an art form. They’re a team that no one wants to watch–in terms of entertainment value they may be the worst team in the NBA. But they win and more importantly they cover pointspreads. The Grizzlies were 57-33 against the spread overall and were money in the bank on the road going 29-17 ATS away from home. They were also a very strong ‘momentum’ team going 19-9 SU/19-7-2 ATS after three or more consecutive wins. They’ve covered ten straight games and dating back to the regular season have covered 15 of their last 17 games. San Antonio, on the other hand, hasn’t been an excellent pointspread team in the second half of the season though they have improved in the playoffs–thanks in large part to their complete walkover against the Kobe-less Los Angeles Lakers.

No matter how you slice it this is going to be a very closely contested series and we expect the Grizzlies to emerge victorious. They’re a younger and hungrier team and we’ll gladly back them getting points.
