NBA Betting Picks: San Antonio Spurs at Portland Trailblazers

Western Conference matchup at the Rose Garden in Portland between the hometown Blazers and the San Antonio Spurs. Both teams played last night. These teams have dramatically different goals this season with San Antonio looking for another return to the NBA Finals and Portland just hoping to start rebuilding a team around last year’s rookie of the year Damien Lillard. Depending on whether or not the nucleus of the Blazers’ lineup can stay healthy and whether some newcomers can help bolster their notoriously weak bench Portland could be back over .500 at the end of this season.

The Spurs haven’t looked great so far this season but they’ve taken care of business. They’re 2-0 but just 1-1 against the spread. Of course the Spurs are a team built for the postseason and not the regular season. Perhaps due to this reality they’ve largely been written off by NBA pundits who have all but anointed the Miami Heat as champions once again before the season even started. Certainly this is not lost on the Spurs who came within mere seconds of upsetting the Heat in last year’s playoffs. Everyone knows that the Spurs’ top three stars–Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker–are somewhat ‘long in the tooth’ which will give head coach Greg Popovich plenty of reason to limit their minutes during the regular season.

The Blazers are in rebuilding mode–they’ve got a decent starting lineup nucleus but a poor defense and a weak bench. That being said, we expect to see a somewhat disinterested effort by the Spurs here coming off a nationally televised game against the Lakers. Even during their recent ‘lean years’ the Blazers have always played the Spurs tough and especially on their home court. Portland remains a team that we’ll look to ‘play on’ at home and ‘play against’ on the road. This is the Blazers’ 2013 home opener and there’s every reason to expect a strong effort in front of the Rose City faithful. We’ll take the points with the hard trying home team facing a Spurs team that will likely be happy with their 2-0 start. This should be a high scoring game so we’ll also play the ‘Over’.
