NFL Football Betting: New York Giants at Green Bay Packers

Sunday’s NFL card concludes with a prime time matchup between the New York Giants and Green Bay Packers. The Packers are 2-1 SU on the season and already have a challenge to keep pace with the 5-0 Minnesota Vikings atop the division. Making the situation more pressing is that the only loss on Green Bay’s ledger is at Minnesota. The Giants opened their season with a pair of wins at Dallas and at home against New Orleans. They’ve since lost at home to Washington and on the road to Green Bay. Prior to their 14 point loss at Minnesota the Giants had been in close games–their first three games were decided by a combined total of 6 points.
Here’s something that we’re going to have to get used to: the Minnesota Vikings’ nasty defense could result in a ‘hangover’ similar to the one handicappers have suggested exists with Seattle over the past few years. The premise is that a team faces such a physical challenge against the aforementioned defenses that they can’t bring their ‘A Game’ the following week. That’s not a bad concept and it might especially apply to a team like the Giants. Eli Manning is a ‘good news/bad news’ quarterback this season. The good news is that he’s #5 in passing yards per game. The bad news–he’s thrown as many interceptions as touchdown passes (4 of each). His passing rating is #18 among starting quarterbacks. The Giants’ defense has been decent against the rush but mediocre at best against the pass.
Aaron Rodgers and the Packers’ offense got off to something of a slow start this season but they looked very good last week. Rodgers had a 4 touchdown game and generally looked very sharp. At one point, Green Bay was overrated at Lambeau Field but over the past few years they’ve been very good at home with a 15-3 SU/11-6-1 ATS record over the last three years. The Giants are just 4-4 SU/ATS on grass while the Packers have been monstrous going 23-5 SU/19-8 ATS on grass. They’ve been especially good in this price range (3.5 to 9.5 point favorite) going 16-3 SU/13-5-1 ATS L3 years.
