NFL Preseason Betting: Indianapolis Colts at New York Giants

One NFL preseason game for Sunday as the Indianapolis Colts hit the road to take on the New York Giants. The Colts opened the preseason on a losing note as they were defeated by the Buffalo Bills. The Giants, meanwhile, earned a victory against the Pittsburgh Steelers. This game will be nationally televised on Fox TV in prime time.
Historically, the Indianapolis Colts were one of the worst preseason betting teams in the sport. During the Peyton Manning era their preseason efforts (or lack thereof) were legendary. Chuck Pagano is in charge now and so far the jury is out on his approach to preseason football. The Colts did cover three of four games last year and are 0-1 ATS this year for a 3-2 ATS mark under their new head coach. The Colts are set for the foreseeable future at quarterback with Andrew Luck and also have arguably the best backup quarterback in the league in former Seattle Seahawks’ starter Matt Hasselbeck. Chandler Harnish is the third string QB and will be seeing plenty of action here.
The Giants have good depth at quarterback–particularly for preseason football. Eli Manning is entrenched as the starter and will see some action here but most of the game will feature backup David Carr (former Houston Texans’ starter) and the Colts’ former backup Curtis Painter. The Giants have been a decent preseason team during the Tom Coughlin era but with a solid effort in the books already against the Pittsburgh Steelers that could ‘take it easy’ somewhat here.
There’s a compelling case to be made that the Colts overachieved last year thanks to the enthusiasm of Andrew Luck at QB and a favorable schedule. Things should get tougher this year and that could start during the preseason. Indianapolis simply doesn’t have the depth that the Giants do on either side of the ball. We’ll look for the Giants to take the win here and we’re getting them at a highly reasonable price. With the #1 and #2 quarterback spot already set for the Colts there’s not much they need to do during the preseason. The Giants should take this game in front of their home fans.
