NHL Hockey betting

If you bet on hockey, then there’s a good chance that you’re used to the long grind of the season. It’s a tougher sport to bet because of the potential for ties that lead to overtime and how those affect betting. It’s important to note right out of the gate that when it comes to hockey betting, that you should be sure to read up on how each specific sports betting site does things. Sites may not pay out if you just bet a team to win on the moneyline if the game ends up going into overtime and they win it that way. Let’s look at NHL betting a bit more in-depth.

NHL Betting Types

With hockey, you have a few different betting options, and all of them are going to be options through pretty much each game. The spread in hockey betting is done a bit differently than most sports though, as it’s typically set to -1.5 for whichever team is the favorite, and the odds will just move around based on how big of a favorite that team is. The spread actually isn’t usually the most popular bet though, and unlike most sports the moneyline bet is very popular in hockey. Betting the moneyline simply allows you to win your bet if the team wins, and they don’t have to win by two more goals if they are -1.5.

The total bets are also popular in the NHL, but these are also done differently than most other sports. The total in hockey betting will be set at 5 or 5.5, and the odds will just move around as action gets bet on it. You also have the option to bet on a team total number of goals scored, which will just vary by who is the favorite and the odds on those bets will vary as well. These can be strong betting options though if you’re looking for something away from the normal.

Last but not least are those futures and prop bets. Both of these are pretty popular, but while prop bets are big in many sports, and they are used in NHL betting, the futures bets are definitely huge. Betting on the eventual Stanley Cup winner is not only a fun bet to follow, but it’s also one that can pay out well and can help you build up your bankroll if you are able to hit. This isn’t the easiest bet to win though obviously, so be careful about your bet sizing.

NHL Betting Tips

The strategy behind money management is going to be important in each and every sport that you bet on. With that being said though, when you bet on hockey it's going to be a long season with many games, so you need to be careful about how much you're betting per game. The first thing to do would be to make sure that you are betting small percentages of your bankroll on the games. No one hits at 100%, so be happy if you're just making money! Last but not least is to rank your bets on a scale of 1 to 3 stars. I would only recommend betting on your three star bets, because those are the ones that you really love the most and feel the most confident about.

NHL betting is incredibly fun, especially since there are games consistently each night throughout the season. You won't get much of a break, so make sure to give yourself plenty of time to research the games and find the best bets available on the board every night!
