NHL Hockey Betting: Columbus Blue Jackets at Buffalo Sabres

The NHL regular season is winding to a close and before a full card of action for Saturday we’ve got a very slow Friday with just one game on the board. The Columbus Blue Jackets are going to finish in last place in the Metropolitan Division no matter what happens here. They’ve got 72 points which leaves them ten back of 7th place New Jersey. They’ll head to Buffalo to take on the Sabres who have been on a nice run late in the season with a 6-2-2 record in their last ten games. Buffalo has two games remaining and are currently in 7th place though they could pass Montreal for 6th. Given the completely non competitive nature of last season’s Sabres team that would be a very impressive accomplishment.

Both teams are in the first of back to back games to conclude the season. The Blue Jackets will play the Chicago Blackhawks at home on Saturday while the Sabres will play at the New York Islanders. Buffalo carries a three game winning streak into this game and have won five of their last 7 games. The Blue Jackets have won two of thir last three but have lost 5 of 7. This has been a fairly even head to head series in recent years. The teams have split eight games overall but the Blue Jackets have won 3 of the last 4 in Columbus. Buffalo has won three of the last four games between the two teams including both games played this year–the Sabres beat the Jackets at home 4-2 on 10/12/15 and shut them out at Nationwide Arena 4-0 on 2/19/16.

Interesting goalie matchup here–the Blue Jackets talented young backup Joonas Korpisalo will make the start facing the Sabres’ Jason Kasdorf. Kasdorf is a product of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and was acquired by Buffalo in the deal for Evander Kane. This will be his first NHL start–and, for that matter, his first pro start at any level.

The debut of goalie Kasdorf does bring some uncertainty into the situation but overall the Sabres are the better team and showing a lot more enthusiasm down the stretch. They should get the win here.
