NHL Hockey Betting: Pittsburgh Penguins at San Jose Sharks

Don’t look now but we’ve got a series again in the Stanley Cup Finals. The San Jose Sharks gutted out an overtime win in Game Three to cut their deficit against the Pittsburgh Penguins in half. Pittsburgh now leads 2-1 with Game Four set for Monday night in San Jose.

The playoffs always bring out unusual heroes and Game Three was no different–it was Joonas Donskoi who scored the overtime winner with some great individual effort below the goal line on the forecheck and a perfect shot high over Pittsburgh goaltender Matt Murray. The play was one that might not have looked like much to the untrained eye but to a hockey aficionado it was an amazing display of skill and ice vision. The Sharks now have the confidence that they can beat Pittsbugh and now have the opportunity to tie the series 2-2 on home ice. It’s probably time to put the Sharks’ regular season home record to bed–it’s still a head scratcher how such a good team can go 18-20-3 on home ice but the important thing now is their 8-2 home record in this playoff series. Based on the visual ‘test’ there’s definitely nothing wrong with the SAP Center as a live hockey venue. The arena was rocking and the crowd was really into it–again, this makes the Sharks’ regular season home record all the more confounding but their recent form at home has been solid.

San Jose goaltender Martin Jones was awarded the third star of the game and deservedly so. Jones made 40 saves on 42 shots and that brings us to a serious area of concern for San Jose. They’re giving up too many shots on goal. Credit Jones for being up to the task but there’s no excuse for giving up 40+ shots in two of the three games in the series. The lack of defensive tenacity by San Jose could end up being the difference in this series.

Pittsburgh is doing a good job getting pucks on net and keeping San Jose from doing the same. They lost the last game but they’re still playing better hockey.
