NHL Hockey Betting: San Jose Sharks at Pittsburgh Penguins

Game Two of the Stanley Cup playoffs goes on Wednesday night as the San Jose Sharks try to even up the series with the Pittsburgh Penguins. Pittsburgh won the first game by a 3-2 margin though statistically the game wasn’t that close. The Penguins put 42 shots on San Jose goaltender Martin Jones and with the exception of a power play goal allowed played pretty close to a flawless game.

The Sharks, on the other hand, were fortunate to be in the position they were in. In many ways, their play was similar to the St. Louis Blues in their previous series. Their defense was porous and they left goaltender Martin Jones to bail them out. They got 26 shots on Matt Murray which isn’t bad but they need to either get more shots or hold Pittsburgh to fewer shots. A combination of the two would be ideal.

It’ll be Jones and Murray once again in net and barring anything unforeseen you can expect to see them the rest of the way. San Jose has a decent backup in Jonathan Bernier but I wouldn’t expect to see him unless Jones gets injured. The Penguins have Marc-Andre Fleury who is now ‘persona non grata’ for some reason. He had one bad game following his return from a concussion so it’s hard to understand why the team is so quick to throw him under the bus.

The Sharks still look like the value side here though the line is clearly shaded to reflect that San Jose ‘needs’ to win this game. In some ways, its nice to see some sanity returning to the pricing involving Pittsburgh games. In their previous series against Tampa Bay there was a complete disconnect between what happened on the ice and the prices that were posted. That provides opportunities, but it’s also tough to read how the money is coming in on a game.

San Jose is an excellent hockey team that played exceptionally well on the road this season. There’s no reason to think that they won’t respond well coming off a loss and they’re definitely the value side.
