NHL Hockey Betting: Washington Capitals at Philadelphia Flyers

The Washington Capitals can complete a sweep of the Philadelphia Flyers with a victory here. There’s little reason to think that Philadelphia will put up much resistance. After playing a fairly decent game against the Presidents’ Cup champions to start the series as the Caps won 2-0 at home it’s been a downward spiral for the Flyers ever since. Steve Mason gave up a viral video ‘soft goal’ in Game Two as the Caps won 4-1. The bottom fell out in Game Three when the Flyers’ own fans started to turn on them, pelting them with giveaway wristbands to the point that the officials assessed a ‘bench minor’ penalty against the fans. Nothing is working for Philadelphia and there’s little to suggest that they’ll do anything other than go quietly here.

The Flyers have been dominated. They’ve not scored a power play goal in the series despite having 13 chances as the Capitals’ penalty kill has been otherworldly. Philadelphia had been doing a decent job shutting down the Washington special teams but that ended in Game Three as the Caps scored five power play goals in nine chances. The Flyers have gotten shots–they got 42 in game two–but have been shut down by Washington goalie Braden Holtby. Now the ugly carnage is apparent–the Capitals have outscored Philadelphia by a combined 12-2 after three games.

Dating back to the regular season the Flyers have lost six of their last eight and it’s hard to see where they get motivation to make a stand. Not from their fans who pelted them with garbage in Game Three. Certainly not from the situation–with Game Five scheduled for Friday night in Washington a win here would merely be a ‘stay of execution’. The Flyers look like a team that wants this season to end and their fans are acting like they want to be put out of their misery. Washington is looking like a Stanley Cup contender and would love to get this series in the bag to get some extra rest before the next round. There’s not really a reason they won’t win here and complete the sweep.
