Soccer Betting: England League 2 Playoffs–Fleetwood vs. York City

We’ll head to England for another late season soccer matchup–this one in the League 2 playoffs. This is the second leg of the semifinals as Fleetwood Town hosts York City at Highbury Stadium holding a narrow 1-0 lead on the aggregate. Fleetwood finished fourth in the League 2 standings with York City 7th. The League 2 playoff format bears some explanation–at the end of the season the top three teams are automatically promoted to League 1. They are joined by the winner of a four team playoff involving the teams that finish 4th through 7th and that’s what York and Fleetwood are playing for.

The fact that Fleetwood owns a 1-0 aggregate lead heading to the home half of this round is important both to how they’ll approach the game and how we’ll handicap the game. The ever important ‘away goal’ means that they just need to salvage a draw on their home field to advance. York, meanwhile, will need to attack and look for goals to get a victory. If York wins 1-0 it’ll go to overtime so they need to win *and* score at least two ‘away goals’ to secure advancement. While Fleetwood is in the drivers seat it would be incorrect to assume that they’ll go with the risky strategy of trying to protect that narrow lead. Even if you’re not familiar with soccer you’ve no doubt seen how dangerous ‘playing not to lose’ is in every sport. This is a case where, as the old saying suggests, that ‘the best defense is a good offense’.

York City had been in exceptional form prior to their upset loss at home. Before this setback they had gone unbeaten in their last 17 matches. They had also gone unbeaten in their last eight away from home including six wins and two draws. That includes a 2-1 win at Fleetwood Town back in February. At home Fleetwood has lost only once in their last nine games. This should be a very hard fought game and one in which it would be wrong to credit Fleetwood with too much of a ‘home field advantage’ against the well travelling York City side. A lot of ways to play this game–a draw is well within the realm of possibility (+225) but we’ll recommend York City on the handicap.
