College Football Betting: Clemson at Boston College

Friday night offers a very entertaining ACC conference battle between #3 ranked Clemson and Boston College. The Tigers gained some skeptics at the start of the year due primarily to a lackluster performance against a seriously underrated Troy State team. They’ve done little wrong since, eviscerating South Carolina State 59-0 despite a short second half and proceeding to dominate Georgia Tech on the road winning 26-7 as -10.5 underdogs. Their biggest win came last Saturday as they outlasted Louisville 42-36 in a rare appearance as an underdog on their home field. Now they’ll face a potentially tricky game on the road off a short week playing a defensively tenacious (though offensively limited) Boston College team. The Eagles are something of a question mark. On one hand, they lead the country in total defense, holding opponents to a mere 202 yards per game. On the other hand, they’ve played a weak schedule and have struggled when stepping up in class against Georgia Tech and were obliterated on both sides of the ball playing at Virginia Tech. The Eagles have since recovered, turning in dominating performances against overmatched Wagner and Buffalo.

The obvious storyline in this game is the potential for a Clemson ‘letdown’ after their biggest win of the season. They’ve had trouble covering numbers off a win against a conference rival, let alone such a competitive one. Clemson is 15-1 SU over the last three years in this situation but only 5-10 ATS. They’ve also failed to produce as a road favorite–despite a 9-1 SU record they’re 3-7 ATS (they’re 1-1 ATS in that role this year). On the other hand, Boston College hasn’t done well after two or more wins in the recent years (0-3 SU/ATS L3 years).

Just can’t see Clemson bringing their ‘A Game’ here off the win over Louisville and with Deshaun Watson playing on a tweaked knee. BC defense should slow down the Clemson offense on paper but they sure didn’t do that against Virginia Tech earlier this season. Price is just too high. Clemson beat Boston College in each of the previous two seasons but is just 0-1-1 against the spread. Clemson wins but Eagles stay inside the number.
