College Football Betting: Clemson at Georgia Tech

Thursday night college football features an ACC battle between Clemson and Georgia Tech. Both teams are 3-0 on the season and have played a similar ‘strength of schedule’. Clemson won a tough opening game against Auburn and then had more trouble than they should have with Troy State at home. They completely lit up FCS South Carolina state last week winning 59-0 in a game that wasn’t even as close as the final score indicated–the coaches agreed to shorten the second half due to the completely non-competitive nature of the game.

Georgia Tech took an opening game win over Boston College and has since had two easy games against Mercer and Vanderbilt. Mercer was a completely outclassed FCS opponent while they’re getting a little more credit than they deserve for a big win over Vanderbilt. Vandy is in something of a ‘down cycle’ having gone 7-17 SU in the first two years under Derek Mason. The teams have split their last head to head meetings with the Tigers winning easily at ‘Death Valley’ last year (43-24) and the Yellow Jackets winning 28-6 on their home field in 2014.

The Yellow Jacket defense looks better than it really is after three games due to the schedule–two plodding FBS teams and an overmatched FCS foe. Last year, Clemson ripped Georgia Tech for over 500 yards of total offense. On the other side of the ball, the Tigers had minimal trouble stopping the Georgia Tech option holding their opponent to just 71 yards rushing. You’re hearing a lot of people chortling this week about Clemson coming into this game off of a ‘short practice week’ but let’s get serious–do you *really* think they spent last week preparing for South Carolina State? In terms of practice, they’re coming off of a ‘bye week’.

Clemson clearly understands how to matchup against the option tactically and that’s dangerous given their superior team speed. The option can negate the speed of a team not used to the tactics but against a team comfortable with playing this unusual offense speed can completely shut it down. Clemson may have been overvalued relative to the line in their first three games (a combined -96.5 favorite in these contests) but they should have enough to win and cover here.
