College Football Betting: Florida Atlantic at Kansas State

This game has all the makings of a mismatch but as all sports bettors know the pointspread can serve as a great equalizer. In a game like this it’s essential to figure out not only if the favorite has the ability to extend a big margin on an opponent but also if they have the motivation to do so. Likewise, it’s important to evaluate the same thing about the underdog. Do they have some sort of tactical quality that would make them be competitive against the pointspread (eg: a stout defense or a plodding rushing attack). Motivation is also important for the underdog–do they think they can be competitive against superior competition or are they showing up just to show a paycheck?

We’ll look at all of these questions as we handicap Saturday’s game between Florida Atlantic and Kansas State. The Wildcats are coming off of an 11-3 season though they lost to a very tough opponent in their opening game on 9/2 at Stanford. Usually, this game would bear little significance to a big favorite but KSU’s strange early schedule might make this game a bit more important. What usually concerns us with a team facing a doormat is that they don’t have enough turnaround time from their previous game to prepare for a weak opponent. Alternately, they might have a more important game on deck which becomes the focus knowing that they don’t *need* to gameplan to beat the weak team.

This game is only the second of the year for Kansas State–they played Sanford on 9/2 giving them 15 days off. Next up, Kansas State faces FCS entrant Missouri State. Their next ‘real game’ is on 10/1 at West Virginia. The sum total of all of this is that it makes Florida Atlantic a focus–and that seldom happens in this type of mismatch. Bill Synder and staff have time to prepare a specific gameplan for a doormat and that’s not going to work out well for a team that was 3-9 SU last year. Florida Atlantic has been a decent underdog in recent years (10-5 ATS) but this situation negates that. Big win for KSU.
