American League Divisional Playoffs for October 5, 2014

The American League Divisional playoffs continue on Sunday with both series playing Game 3. In both cases the series underdog is holding a 2-0 lead. In the AL West the Kansas City Royals have gone up 2-0 on the Los Angeles Angels. That’s a bit of a shock considering that the Angels finished the regular season with the best record in baseball. Back East the Baltimore Orioles have gone up 2-0 on the Detroit Tigers.

BALTIMORE ORIOLES AT DETROIT TIGERS:

The Baltimore Orioles were something of a surprise team this season even as they ran away with the AL East title. They head to Detroit up 2-0 in this best of five series and needing just 1 victory in the next 3 games to advance to the American League Championships. We’re going to do what we’ve done throughout this series so far and take Baltimore. There’s always value in going against teams who are facing ‘must win situations’. Detroit is starting left hander David Price who has been good though not great since joining the team. Bud Norris will be Baltimore’s starting pitcher and his recent form has been very good. In Norris’ last three starts he’s pitched 18 1/3 innings with a 1.47 ERA, a 0.982 WHIP and 23 strikeouts. Game is essentially a coin flip and we’re getting a nice plus money price on one side.

LOS ANGELES ANGELS AT KANSAS CITY ROYALS:

The LA Angels are in a bit of a pickle as they head to Kansas City down 0-2 to the upstart Royals. They need to win or go home and the team hasn’t been in good form lately. They really seemed to ‘take their foot off the gas’ after they clinched the AL West which in theory isn’t bad but they’ve been unable to regain their momentum. The Angels have now lost 7 of their last 9 and are facing a Kansas City team that was playing hard to the wire. The Royals have won 9 of their last 11 games. Not sure that the Angels have the moxie to get back in this series on the road. KC should have plenty of confidence having won 5 of 8 head to head this year including 2 of 3 in KC.
