MLB Baseball Betting: Atlanta Braves at Chicago White Sox

The Atlanta Braves and Chicago White Sox end the first half of the Major League Baseball season with the third game of an Interleague series. The teams split the first two games making this the ‘rubber game’ of the set but in reality it means much more to the Chicago White Sox. The Sox can move into at least a tie for second place with a win here and put themselves in a more advantageous spot in a very competitive AL Central race. The Cleveland Indians took over the divisional lead during their recent 14 game winning streak but they’ve regressed since their streak ended losing 6 of 10. They’re still 6.5 games up on the second place Detroit Tigers and 7 games up on both the White Sox and Kansas City Royals who are tied for third. The Minnesota Twins have taken up permanent residence in last place (20 games out of first) though they will end the first half of the season playing better baseball than they have all year winning 7 of 10.

The Atlanta Braves are essentially ‘treading water’ as they end the first half of the year but after the huge hole they dug at the start of the season that’s just not good enough. The Braves are back in last place–not only in the National League but once again they have the worst record in baseball. They’re 10.5 games back of the fourth place Philadelphia Phillies and 22.5 games out of first place in the NL East. Atlanta will give right hander Mike Foltynewicz his 9th start of the year–they’ve lost 5 of his 8 previous assignments including 3 of 4 on the road. Foltynewicz has a 4.07 ERA and 1.309 WHIP overall, a 5.75 ERA and a 1.622 WHIP on the road and a 4.91 ERA in his last three starts–two of which were Braves wins.

He’ll be opposed by former Tampa Bay Rays ace James Shields who is finally starting to show some good form in his most recent outings. He’s struggled mightily for most of the season with Chicago losing 12 of his 17 starts on the season. They’ve won 2 of his last 3, however, with Shields putting up a decent 3.06 ERA. Not really thrilled about laying this price with the Sox but the game is definitely more important to the home team.
