MLB Baseball Betting: Milwaukee Brewers at Pittsburgh Pirates

The Milwaukee Brewers and Pittsburgh Pirates will start a three game series on Tuesday at PNC Park. The Brewers are going nowhere, currently in fourth place in the NL Central. They’re 6 games up on the Cincinnati Reds (all records pending the outcome of Monday games) so they don’t need to worry about dropping into last place for the time being. They’re 7 games back of the Pirates for third place and 7.5 games back of the second place St. Louis Cardinals. They’re 15.5 back of the first place Chicago Cubs. Hard to see them going on a strong enough run to challenge the contenders.

Pittsburgh needs to do what they can to cut into the Cubs’ lead. It’s hard to think that the Cubs are going to continue playing as poorly as they did right before the All Star Break. Considering how bad things were for the Cubs both the Cards and Pirates are likely disappointed that they didn’t make up more ground on Chicago. Pittsburgh is now 8.5 games out of first with St. Louis 8 games out. The Pirates have won 6 of 10 which isn’t bad but it’s not going to be enough to run down Chicago if they return to any semblance of form.

Milwaukee will start Junior Guerra and he’s been a very pleasant surprise for the Brewers. The right hander has a 3.06 ERA and a 1.069 WHIP overall. Most impressively, the Brewers have won 10 of his 13 starts meaning that he’s been on the mound for over 25% of the Brewers’ wins this season (25.6% to be exact). His ERA is slightly higher on the road at 3.44 though he’s got a 1.037 WHIP–and the Pirates are 6-0 in his road starts. He’s been very sharp lately with a 1.29 ERA and a 0.857 WHIP in his last three games. Milwaukee went 2-1 in those starts.

Jameson Taillon Looked really good in his last game at Seattle back on June 29 but hard to know what he’s going to bring. His YTD numbers aren’t impressive. He’s started two games at home with a 6.30 ERA and a 1.700 WHIP. Last 3 starts show a 5.79 ERA and a 1.714 WHIP though the Pirates did win two of those games. Pirates are the better team but the best play is the value on the Brewers with the seriously underrated Guerra on the hill.
