NFL Football Betting: Pittsburgh Steelers at San Diego Chargers

AFC action on Monday Night Football this week as the Pittsburgh Steelers head West to take on the San Diego Chargers. Both teams are 2-2 on the season and still looking for direction. The Steelers are coming off a disappointing ‘defeat snatched from the jaws of victory’ loss to Baltimore while the Chargers are off a win against Cleveland.

The Pittsburgh Steelers have a problem and his name is Michael Vick. Vick is not only a miserable person but apparently a bringer of bad karma–not surprising given his past. After Steelers fans rationalized the signing of the most overrated quarterback in NFL history by thinking that “Vick won’t play” behind the durable Roethlisberger here he is–the Pittsburgh Steelers’ starting quarterback. Roethlisberger will be sidelined for at least the next month with his knee injury but after a month of Vick it might not matter. Vick is on a 6-14 run as a NFL starter. To his credit, he’s tried to play within the Steelers’ system more than he did in previous stops in Philadelphia and New York but that doesn’t negate Vick’s biggest liability as a starting quarterback. Well, one of them at least–you can’t count on the guy to make the right decision or execute with the game on the line. But at this point project Landry Jones is their only other quarterback making Vick the best of limited–and bad–options.

San Diego isn’t a great pointspread team. In fact, they’re near breakeven in most situational breakdowns. They’ve got some significant injuries on the offensive line but they’ve got a significantly better quarterback in Phillip Rivers. They have played a tougher schedule than Pittsburgh–the Steelers’ defense has looked OK against some mediocre teams but their offense has been pitiful under Vick. The Steelers have dominated head to head play but that’s as much a function of their legacy of excellence than anything else. Steelers are 10-4 ATS overall against San Diego including 4 of 5 at home. But there’s no reason to ‘fix what ain’t broke’ and since I’ve made a ton of money betting against Michael Vick led teams ever since the laughable ‘dream team’ era in Philadelphia there’s no reason to stop here.
