NHL Hockey Betting: Detroit Red Wings at Carolina Hurricanes

Interesting Eastern Conference battle on tap for Monday night as the Detroit Red Wings head South to take on the Carolina Hurricanes. The Wings are 4-4-2 in their last 10 games but are well off the pace in the Atlantic Division with a record of 14-14-4. Detroit has played fairly well on the road this season with a 7-5-1 record away from the Joe Louis Arena. Carolina is 4-3-3 in their last ten games but have been very good at home this season with a 9-3-1 record contrasted with their 4-8-6 road record. The Wings have lost six of nine overall while the ‘canes have won 4 of their last 7.

One of Detroit’s biggest problems this season is what looked like a strength coming into the year–goaltending. Petr Mrazek was supposed to be the goalie of the future but he struggled in the early going. Jimmie Howard has been playing reasonably well but not getting much help from his teammates. Howard has a 1.95 goals against average and a 0.934 save percentage but the Wings have a record of 5-7-1 in his starts. The Hurricanes will counter with Cam Ward who has been playing reasonably well this season. Ward is 10-8-6 on the year with a 2.30 goals against average and a 0.915 save percentage. Ward is notoriously erratic–at his best there are few better but he can also be very ‘ordinary’ if things aren’t going his way. Ward was supposedly on his way out of Carolina after former Vancouver backup Eddie Lack was signed. Instead, he’s been the team’s salvation this year after Lack suffered a concussion and is out ‘indefinitely’. Lack started only four games this year with Michael Leighton currently serving as the backup.

Detroit’s other issue is injuries–Mike Green and Alexey Marchenko are listed as ‘questionable’ here with six other players out at least three weeks. Johan Franzen is out indefinitely, Brendan Smith is out 4-6 weeks and Justin Abdelkader is out 2-4 weeks. Carolina is healthier. The teams have split their last four games with Detroit winning the only meeting so far (4-2 at the Joe Louis Arena). Wings have won 5 of the last 7 meetings and the last 3 at Carolina. We’ll take the price with the road team.
