NHL Hockey Betting: Minnesota Wild at New York Rangers

The Minnesota Wild are coming off a big win on Thursday night at the Bell Centre over the Montreal Canadiens. They’ll try to do it again tonight, this time at Madison Square Garden against the New York Rangers. The Wild are the hottest team in the Western Conference having won nine straight games and right on the heels of the hottest team in the league, the Columbus Blue Jackets who have won 11 straight games. They’ve moved into second place in the Central Division (and Western Conference) just four points back of the Chicago Blackhawks. The Rangers, meanwhile, are 7-1-2 in their last ten games and are currently tied with the Pittsburgh Penguins for second place in the Metropolitan Division just one point back of the aforementioned Blue Jackets. The Rangers last played on Tuesday, losing in embarrassing fashion at Pittsburgh by a 7-3 score.

Bad news for the Wild right off the bat with Zach Parise listed as ‘doubtful’ with the flu. Then again, he missed last night’s game at Montreal and the Wild were able to prevail. Devan Dubnyk is listed as the starter once again for Minnesota and the one time Edmonton and Arizona castoff is playing as well as any goalie in hockey. Dubnyk has a 17-6-3 record with a 1.57 goals against average and a 0.948 save percentage with 5 shutouts. His goals against average and save percentage are currently the best in the NHL and his performance is a big part of why the Wild have the best team defense in the NHL.

He’ll be opposed by veteran Henrik Lundqvist who is having a decent, though not overwhelmingly great, season with a 15-8-1 a 2.34 goals against average and a 0.920 save percentage. The Rangers are deadly on the offensive end with the third best goals per game average in the NHL (3.23) though Minnesota isn’t too far off tied for fifth at 2.94 goals per game. The teams split two games last year with each winning on home ice. Ultimately, this play comes down to pricing. This looks like a coin flip at best with several edges accruing toward the road team. Yet the Rangers are -155 favorites as much for the name on their sweater as anything else. We’ll take the underdog Wild.
