NHL Hockey Betting: Ottawa Senators at New York Rangers

Eastern Conference matchup as the NHL gets back to work on Tuesday pits the Ottawa Senators against the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden. The Senators are the second place team in the Atlantic Division but have been ‘treading water’ of late and unable to close the three point gap between themselves and the first place Montreal Canadiens. Fortunately for the Senators, the Habs have also been ‘treading water’ lately and haven’t been able to extend their advantage.

New York has been playing very well but there’s only one problem–‘playing well’ just isn’t good enough in a division where Columbus doesn’t lose anymore. The Blue Jackets will be going for their 13th consecutive win this evening and that has enabled them to take over the lead in the Metropolitan Division. The Rangers are essentially ‘neck and neck’ with the Pittsburgh Penguins and it’s a few points back to the defending President’s Trophy champion Washington Capitals.

The Senators will look to Mike Condon in net with their first two goalies on the depth chart ‘out indefinitely’. Starter Craig Anderson is out for personal reasons as his wife battles cancer while backup Andrew Hammond is out with an ankle injury. Not surprising given his typically decent performance in a brutal role in Montreal last year following Carey Price’s injury, Condon is turning in a solid effort with a record of 8-3-2 along with a 2.20 goals against average and a 0.924 save percentage.

He’ll be opposed by Rangers’ backup Annti Ranta and there are plenty of teams in the league that would want him as their #1 goalie. Ranta is having a solid season behind Henrik Lundqvist with a record of 8-4-0 to go with a 2.17 goals against average and a 0.926 save percentage.

The Senators remain an underrated quantity and have been a good value in the underdog role of late. They’ve won four straight while the Rangers have lost their last two. Sens have given the Rangers fits dating back a number of years with a 28-12 record at the Garden. Just tough to pass up such a good team at an excellent price.
