NHL Hockey Betting: Winnipeg Jets at Detroit Red Wings

It’s been a good news/bad news situation this year for the Detroit Red Wings. They’re currently in second place in the Atlantic Division but trail the red hot Montreal Canadiens by 6 points. They opened the season with 6 wins in their first 8 games but have now lost three straight though they did pick up a point in an OT loss at Philadelphia last time out. A major concern is the defense and goaltending which had been very solid until this week. Unfortunately, the Wings have allowed 9 goals in their last two games and you’re not going to win a lot of hockey games that way.

The Winnipeg Jets are in the middle of the pack in a highly competitive Central Division. They’ve also lost three straight and stand at 4-6-1 on the year. They’ve got the opposite problem–the defense has been decent but their offense has disappeared. The Jets have now lost four of their last 6 scoring only 10 goals during that stretch (a 1.66 goals per game stretch). In their four losses they’ve scored only 5 goals. Neither goaltender has been confirmed as of yet but the Jets will likely start Connor Hellebuyck in the second game of a back to back situation with Mike Hutchinson starting on Thursday. Detroit will likely start Peter Mrazek but could always come back with veteran Jimmy Howard. The word around the campfire is that Detroit is looking to move one of their goalies (almost certainly Howard) and this might be the best move for everyone concerned.

The Wings have a very tough stretch coming up with home games against Winnipeg, Edmonton, Vancouver and Tampa Bay along with road games at Philadelphia and Montreal. In general, we like to play the Western Conference team in ‘East vs. West’ games though Winnipeg hasn’t been good in this situation with a 31-39 -11.5 unit run during the past three years. Detroit has been good against the West going 37-22 +11.4 over the last three years. Wings are 10-6 during this stretch after 3+ losses and they’ll be rested. Both teams can really use a win but based on the setup it looks like the Wings are the team more likely to get one.
