World Cup Soccer Betting: England vs. Uruguay

World Cup betting action for Thursday will feature Group D play between Uruguay and England. Both teams are now in a veritable ‘must win’ position though there is likely more urgency for Uruguay who lost 3-1 to Costa Rica in their opening game. Losing to what is likely the weakest team in the group means that they need to step up their game against a couple of heavyweights in Italy and England to advance. England also lost their first game but dropping a 2-1 verdict to Italy isn’t quite as shocking as Uruguay’s result. Still, England will want to get on the winning track here to help facilitate advancing to the knockout stages.

Uruguay’s loss is also very problematic due to the way it happened. They were leading 1-0 and looked to be in control going in to the second half before they collapsed and allowed Costa Rica three unanswered goals. This means that they’re in a tough spot on goal differential which would be the first tiebreaker for advancement. Of course it’ll be tough for anything that Uruguay does to match their performance in 2010 when they surprised everyone by making it through to the semifinals. Uruguay’s biggest issue is that they’re not a well balanced team. They’re very strong up front but it’s hard for their strikers to do anything when the midfield play is substandard. And with their shaky defense evidenced in the Costa Rica loss the offense has to ‘click’ for this team to win.

The mood is much different in the England camp where supporters were generally pleased with the team’s play against Italy despite the result. Wayne Rooney didn’t have a good game and some have questioned whether he should sit here but Roy Hodgson is more likely to make a tactical move that will allow Rooney to play in his natural position in the centre of the field. The recent run of disappointing play away from home is still a concern–England has won only 1 of the last 9 games outside of Great Britain.

If England can get anything near the strong effort they showed against Italy they should be able to defeat Uruguay with relative ease. They’ve got more talent and they’re just the tactically superior side.
